Juneteenth 2020 started with the title. I remember hearing that Trump was going to hold his Tulsa rally on June 19 (he ended up changing that date) and thinking that was so insidious- then being sobered by the fact that most people have never heard of Juneteenth- I myself had barely ever acknowledged it. Lyrically, the song turned into a reclamation of my country as a Black bi-racial woman- many lines jotted down as I drove across it (CHI to LA) for the first time, astounded by the different colors and textures of the landscape, formations that resembled my own flesh, and just the vastness you can't comprehend until you leave your own bubble. Musically, Tawny and I wanted to explore some of our influences that aren't always translated with our bigger vocal styles- more post punk- Gang of Four, Devo, Talking Heads kinds of structures...
